Surfing and getting older – that’s the theme of The Ghost Ship, a short film from Brett Shaw, who tells us a story that is at once individual and universal, that of Bernie Shelly and his recovery from a hip replacement operation, for whom the desire to surf was stronger than the depth of his pain.
Bernie doesn’t let his reduced abilities frustrate him – well, a little, undoubtedly. Instead we see his joy at being back in the water and being able to surf again. This short clip is an exploration of the transience of life as seen through the prism of surf. Bernie swims, paddles, floats and becomes one with the sea. Bernie surfs and it’s pure joy.
