Tiffany Manchester, from surf to writing
Aloha Tiffany! Can you introduce yourself?
Aloha! I’m Tiffany! I was born and raised in Canada, but I hate the long winter months so I moved to Hawaii! That was about 10 years ago. I love the tropics and the aloha vibe here, and this is also where I started surfing. I love watching the WSL and all the pro-women because I was once a pro-athlete myself, so I feel a connection to their experience and can relate to what they’re going through. Plus, watching them has really helped me to improve my surfing skills!
Did you use to write book before write Surfer Girl Kick Ass?
I wrote articles for kayaking magazines back when I was a professional athlete in freestyle whitewater kayaking, and I’ve some done blogging, but this is my very first novel.
Why this book about a surfing girl?
It all started with a bumper sticker I made that said: surfergirlskickass
It’s a crazy story but totally true! My boyfriend and I brought them to Nicaragua on a surf trip and gave them out + sold them…for fun! Then, a couple of years later (while in Nicaragua again) I felt the urge to write a story about surfer girl. She turned into a pro-surfer when i realized I wanted to incorporate/teach some of the lessons I learned from being a professional athlete.
I actually procrastinated getting started for about a month, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Eventually, the force was too strong to let my fear get in the way and I finally sat down and began writing.
What is the place of sport in your life?
Sport/fitness is a top priority for me. I have to be active for at least 30 minutes/day otherwise I don’t like how I feel – because moving the body is good for the mind, body, and soul! Surfing is my main sport, and I also use an amazing app called Tone It Up for my daily workouts.
What do you want to give to your readers through this book?
I want to give my readers peace of mind. I want them to feel more connected to their inner truths, to trust their instincts, and to give them the clarity and insight that they’ve been asking for. I also want them to learn more about surfing and the ocean!
Can you speak to us a little bit about your book?
This book is a self-help wrapped in fiction, and is designed to inspire and educate surfer girls how to empower themselves throughout the ups and downs of life (and surfing). It incorporates my own experiences and lessons from being a professional athlete in freestyle whitewater kayaking, along with some core spiritual principals (meditation, mindset, miracles and angels).
It’s the story of Zoe Smith: she is flailing in her career as a professional surfer on the WSL (World Surf League)… as well as in her relationship with Derek. She doesn’t like the person she’s become and needs to make a change. But what?
Stuck in a funk, she heads home to Australia at the end of the competitive season, uncertain of her future. Will the end of her relationship also signify the end of her career? Determined to get to the root cause of her drama she realizes it’s time to face her ‘self’ and make some difficult decisions. With the help of a best friend, a boy crush, a strange encounter with an angel, and some much-needed soul-searching, she finds herself on a magical journey out of the darkness and into the light… in surfing and in life.
We wish you good luck for the future!
