Filipa Costa, a collagist artist

Filipa Costa was born in Porto in 1985. She lives and works (artist, art curator, gallerist and designer) in Leça da Palmeira.

Filipa started her studies in Interior Design but before finished she realized her true passion was History of Art, she graduated from Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto in 2011. Surf is part of her family history and this was the way, looking the world upside down, that took her to create an innovative project in 2011 – Surf Leça.

Combining Surf store and rental, art gallery and atelier with a relaxing and comfortable environment, Surf Leçahonours the culture of surf, bodyboard, skate, snowboard, yoga, meditation and street art. Furthermore, Filipa has worked has a curator for events, participated in workshops (some of them at Serralves museum, Porto) and some exhibitions.

Out of her imagination, she builds intricate compositions where her background of surf and her hometown are always present. Collages are part of her universe, contrasting patterns put together to form a new continuous shape and lines which revels an exotic and crumbled image. Additionally, ecology is one of her biggest influences, in the use of materials and bases.

Why the Collages?

“The collages born from the need and, like everything in life, start to evolve and end up becoming a true passion. The first handmade collages where made for Surf Leça (art exhibition's posters) and after that I realized I did enjoy that kind of work. From small dimensions to big canvas, paper cuts, billboard, surf fins and surfboards I start to create my own universe (a universe filled with “creative chaos” ) that leads the path to an exotic and fragmented environment. The concepts of space, construction, deconstruction and color are fundamental in my works. Since January 2017 I started working with the digital collages."

What are your influences in your work?

"-Surf ! It is part of my roots, from my family history (I started working since I was a teenager in my father's surf shop). The sea is a source of inspiration (I have always lived by the sea and today I work right in front of the beach).

-Leça da Palmeira, because it's the place where I live and work. It is a land full of charm and with a very interesting heritage.

-Interior Design.

-And India. There is a fascination for this country because of its cultural and religious diversity. It is possible to confer on my works influences that refers us to this land as eclectic as the mandalas and even the figure of some Hindu gods such as the case of Ganesh, Lakshmi, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu."

What about framing?

"It's one of the things I'm most concerned about .

All my digital collages come with a carefully chosen frame, considering the format and color(s) of the work. I like to highlight them from the bottom and give them tri-dimension and consequently movement. All collages are different because I use pens on the top of the prints as a way to personalize them.

Interior design was part of my studies and I work every day with this in Surf Leça. The colors and patterns are a constant in my works."

Can you tell us more about Stumble’s serie?

"I start to create the stumble’s series on the beginning of the 2018. Digital cut-out of small dimension inspired by a particular song with the same name (from Kraak &Smaak) and is an ode to the longboard culture. I try to capture the flowy movement of the many characters not only by their own display (while the move along the longboard) but also on the particular way they insert themselves on the different scenes filled with layers, colours, patterns and texture (so singular and exhausted on my portfolio).

And The boy from Leça's serie?

"I'm working on it...is a work in progress... An homage to my hometown and also to longboard culture. A combination of Interior Design and Graphic Design."
