Discovering the south of Portugal
At the very tip of south-west Portugal lies the Costa Vicentina, a sun soaked pristine wild coast facing the Atlantic Ocean. Its abundant and amazing waves, make it a perfect surfer enclave between Alentejo and the Algarve.
This western sliver of Southern Europe stretches between Sagres and Odeiceixhe and offers stunning golden rock cliffs, more than 150 remarkable beaches – wide and wild, all white sand dunes and red cliffs are some of the loveliest in the world.
In the middle of the Costa Vicentina National Park, lies the untouched and authentic village of Aljezur. Off the beaten track, Aljezur remains unexplored and the nearby crashing waves drown out the hubbub of the world. You can check out the breaking waves of Amado, d’Arrifana, Monte Clerigo, Beliche or Tonel. But the best kept secret is called « Praia da Amoreira », Amoreira was recently voted by the Sunday Times UK Traveler « THE most beautiful beach in Europe ». Depending on the wind and the swell, you will have to drive around a bit. There is always a small peak that works. It is easy to find uncrowded spots and a good wave for your level.
When the surf is flat, it is a good time to go explore the inland countryside and the small pitturesques villages of Carrapateira, Aljezur and Bordeira, or eat a fish Cataplana in a traditional restaurant. The landscape varies from cork trees to olive and almond trees, orange trees and lemon trees.
2800 hours of sun a year, the water is never really cold, West Algarve appears to be the “Little California of Europe”. It is also referred to as “Europe’s best answer to Bali” as it now starts to become a growing surf and yoga enclave.
